EDMONTON – The city’s first baby of the year is also the first born for Erin and Jeff McAdam of Spruce Grove.

Kael Hudson made his grand debut – in his 7 lbs. and 7 oz. glory – at the Misericordia at 12:24. That’s two minutes before the second baby of the New Year – also a boy – was born at the Grey Nun’s hospital.

Kael’s original due date was Jan. 8. With his early arrival, he narrowly missed sharing a birthday with his mom, who just turned 29 on Dec. 30 – something she admits she was hoping wouldn’t happen.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

His dad had his fingers crossed that Kael would be born on the first. He said the experience of getting to meet his first child has been “pretty overwhelming.”

“It’s probably the greatest feeling ever.”

And the Oilers fan already has high hopes for his little one, joking that he’ll have skates on him probably within a week or two.

“May be the future power forward for the Oilers,” said the proud new dad.

“I’m just happy that he’s here, and healthy and happy,” his wife added. “That’s what matters to me.”
