Carbon monoxide scares prompt evacuations

CALGARY- A carbon monoxide scare forced hundreds of Calgarians from their homes on Monday night.

Fire crews were called to an apartment complex along Royal Birch Way after dangerous levels of CO were detected.

Investigators say it was caused by a ventilation shaft freezing over, which stopped furnaces from getting fresh air. That pushed CO levels to 55 parts per million.

142 suites were evacuated and people waited in Calgary Transit buses for hours while the building was ventilated.

Several residents were checked out by EMS as a precaution, but no one had to be taken to hospital.

Firefighters were also called to the Bannister Road area due to CO in a hallway, caused by a heating unit. The building was quickly ventilated and did not have to be evacuated.
