The TTC says there is no subway service on Line 2 between Kipling Station and Jane Station after a track level fire and it “could be a couple days” before service fully resumes.
Delays are expected Friday at Kipling Station, Islington Station, Royal York Station, Old Mill Station and Jane Station, the TTC said. Service to stations east of Jane Station is not affected.
Shuttle buses are running between the stations as TTC makes repairs.
TTC spokesperson Stuart Green told Global News there was a fire in an open area near a fence at Islington Station at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
“The fire severely damaged a box that contains a number of important cables for our communication system, signaling, and switching,” Green said in an update on Friday morning.
“The damage was so extensive that we simply cannot safely run service to that area,” he said, adding that it “could be a couple days” before full subway service resumes.
Green said the TTC is hoping to shorten the service outage from Kipling to Jane stations to only between Kipling and Islington stations.
“Full reopening, we’re looking at best case a day or two,” he said, but noted it could go into next week. He warned commuters to check back in for Monday on the status of the subway line.
“With the nature of this damage and because it impacts so many different safety critical functions, we simply don’t know how long it will take,” Green said.
The TTC advises people coming from the west to use GO Transit or the UP Express.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Green said they are still investigating if it was external or from within their own system.
