Giuseppe De Vito to go straight to trial

MONTREAL – A man who was on the lam for nearly four years until his arrest weeks ago has renounced his right to a bail hearing and will go straight to trial.

Giuseppe De Vito, once one of the most wanted men in Canada, was arrested weeks ago after being sought since Nov. 2006 in Project Colisee, a large scale investigation into the Mafia in Montreal and its associates.

De Vito appeared before a judge Wednesday morning and, through his lawyer Daniel Rock, stated he does not want a bail hearing.

Rock also said that after a discussion with prosecutor Yvan Poulin, a decision has been made to go straight to a trial on the drug trafficking charges De Vito faces in Colisee. The decision means De Vito will also not have a preliminary inquiry.

The trial is set to begin in June during which a Quebec Court judge will hear motions for two weeks.

Evidence is expected to be heard during a period of three weeks in November.

De Vito is alleged to have had a financial interest in a shipment of 218 kilograms of cocaine that was seized at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. Court documents already released suggest De Vito conducted an investigation into why the smuggling effort wasn’t carried as planned.

De Vito was in hiding when his two daughters died in their family home in Laval. His wife, Adele Sorella, is charged with killing her two daughters.
