Man shot, seriously injured during ‘major police incident’ in Surrey, watchdog called in

B.C.’s police watchdog has been called to investigate a major police incident that happened Sunday evening in Guildford.

Around 10 p.m., Surrey Police Service officers were making foot patrols near 152 Street and 104 Avenue and received a report of a man with a gun, according to a release from BC RCMP.

The officers found the man but he ran off when they approached.

Shortly after, the two police officers found the man at the Grosvenor Square Apartments where he reportedly produced a weapon, police said.

One of the officers fired their gun and hit the man.

Police said medical assistance was provided and he was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Nobody else was injured.

A neighbour told Global News they heard gunshots and a video circulating on social media shows an officer yelling, “Get on the ground,” along with sirens and gunshots. A person can then be seen running.

The Independent Investigations Office has been deployed. The watchdog investigates police-involved incidents involving serious injury or death.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
