Edmonton police investigate 82nd Avenue hit and run that seriously injured pedestrian

UPDATE: Edmonton police said Tuesday afternoon that the damaged SUV that police were looking for on Monday, March 18, was found. The search for the driver continues.

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating after a pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by an SUV that then left the scene.

Police told Global News that officers were called to a collision in the area of 82nd Avenue and 97th Street at about 8:15 a.m. on Monday.

According to police, the person who was injured is a 38-year-old woman. She was with a young child at the time.

Police said the child was not injured but the woman was taken to hospital.

In an update on Monday afternoon, police confirmed the six-year-old child was the victim’s daughter.

The EPS said its major collisions investigation section is investigating.

“It was reported to police that a woman and her daughter were walking southbound across 82nd Avenue at 97th Street in a marked crosswalk when the woman was struck by an orange SUV travelling eastbound on 82nd Avenue,” the EPS said in a news release.

“The woman reportedly moved her child out of the way before she was struck. The SUV did not remain on scene and knocked over a stop sign before driving away.”

Police said investigators are hoping citizens will be able to help them find the suspect vehicle, which is described as a 2011 or 2012 orange Dodge Journey. Police provided a stock photo of what the vehicle may look like, which can be viewed below.

Police noted the vehicle will likely have extensive front-end damage, including a missing fog light and front quarter panel and a broken grill.
