Calgary city council slashes $3 park-and-ride fee

The much reviled $3 park-and-ride fee will be a goner by April after council voted to axe the parking payment for most users at LRT lots.

Council also wants a reserve system put in place at some lots, which would set aside a certain number of spaces, possibly 25 per cent of spots. That would give users the option of paying to secure those spots at high-use lots.

But in killing the park-ride-fee, council eats into some of the cuts to the city budget they have been making in recent days. The decision will cost the city $6.1 million in budgeted revenue.

The motion passed on Tuesday does give the city some wiggle room to continue looking at the issue and asks administration to come back with some recommendations.

Those will deal with such things as whether fees are barriers to use, vehicle spillover into nearby communities, and adjusting costs to the market.

The decision came Tuesday as aldermen continued to debate city budget adjustments.
