The City of Vernon is choosing education over eradication in dealing with its coyote problem.
The Bella Vista neighbourhood in Vernon has made several complaints of coyotes in the last several months. In October, a dog was grabbed while walking a path near Long Acre Drive. A coyote stole a chicken from a backyard on Mission Hill earlier in November.
The City of Vernon will add signage in the neighbourhood and mail out education pamphlets to residents.
Mayor Wayne Lippert says culling the animals is out of the question.
“There isn’t anything saying it’s needed,” says Lippert. “Nature’s cycle is food sources go up and predators come in and clean out the food source and the predators leave. So that may be the other part of it. Nature may just look after a lot of this.”
The Ministry of Environment is also against a coyote cull as a solution to the animal problem.
