Difficult morning commute for Edmonton motorists

Edmonton – Another snowfall in Alberta’s Capital Region is once again creating challenging driving conditions for drivers.

Drivers are being encouraged to drive defensively as up to 10 centimetres is expected to fall in Edmonton by the end of Thursday, causing extremely icy roads.

Edmonton Police responded to nine collisions from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday including:

· Two hit-and-run collisions
· Two injury collisions
· Five property damage collisions

On Thursday morning, drivers were tweeting their thoughts and advice on dealing with Edmonton’s road conditions.

The City of Edmonton is asking motorists to drive to the conditions.

There were 120 pieces of equipment on city roads Thursday morning, mainly focusing on arterial and collector routes.

“At this point and time we’re handling it with our own forces. There’s no plan to implement a parking ban at this point, but, again, we’ll see what happens tonight,” says Roland Aitchison, Superintendent of Operations

Crews are covering roads with a salt and sand mixture.

“It’s just a matter of going over and over the same sections of road until it gets back into a drivable condition,” explains Aitchison.

The city also plans to finish removing windrows from school zones by Friday.

By 5 p.m., the EPS had responded to 121 collisions including:

· 22 hit-and-run collisions
· nine injury collisions
· 90 property damage collisions
