Know Your Zone campaign partially successful

Every year it snows in Winnipeg. And almost every year, the city budgets too little for snow removal. Rudi Pawlychyn / Global News

WINNIPEG – Hundreds of Winnipeggers had their cars towed during the city’s plowing operation and thousands were ticketed, while others complained they moved their cars but the street wasn’t cleared.

There were 2,823 tickets handed out and 775 cars towed from Wednesday at 7 p.m. until Thursday at 7 a.m. as city plows cleared streets according to “snow zones.”

On Wedneday night (from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.), 773 tickets were handed out and 280 vehicles were towed. On Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., there were 901 vehicles ticketed and 164 towed. The most tickets and tows happened Thursday night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) – 1,149 tickets and 331 tows.

While the system worked great for some, others were unhappy with the results, and Twitter users shared their complaints and kudos.

Plowing in snow zone A will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and continue until 7 a.m. Friday.

City officials have said if you were in a designated snow zone and your street didn’t get plowed, you don’t have to worry about moving your car again.

However, you might want to keep it off the street so it gets properly plowed.
