Philips Airfryer does it all with a dab of healthy cooking

Today on my GlobalTV Sunday Morning News Tech Talk segment I cooked up some sweet and sour chicken drumsticks with the new Philips Viva Collection Airfryer which we are giving away today, available at Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Outfitters and Coast Wholesale Appliances as well as amazon.ca, $283.

The Airfryer is basically countertop convection oven for frying, grilling, roasting, even baking portions for up to four folks.

The removable basket for example can cook 800 grams of French or chunky fries, potato wedges, slices cubes or eight drumsticks. A handy cooking guide book is included to get you started with mostly 30-minute cooking. Depending on what you are preparing, part of the cooking is set at higher temperatures for searing and lower settings for cooking the inside of your meal. There are also recipes for sauce preparations too. With some practise, you can adjust the crispiness of food with out affecting the inside juiciness by varying the temperature and dial-up timer.

My family affectionately nicknamed the Airfryer “Darth” which looks much like the famous Start Wars helmet. All kidding aside, we are all impressed with the results. It runs relatively quiet, is touchable outside while cooking and interestingly, it drops its power usage down by 70 per cent making efficient use of its internal heat circulating fan.

I also showed the Philips Disney StoryLight, $159.95, available exclusively at the Apple Store. It’s a single LED spotlight adorned with Micky’s ears, silhouetted when placed against the wall and ceiling it gently floods. It also includes a round “bridge” device which magically changes the spotlight colour in your child’s room as you flip to the next page of the Disney story on your iPad. Three free Disney stores are included, with many more online for purchase. Stories can be read for you or you can read at your own pace.

How does this work? Simple instructions have you download the free iOS Disney Storytime app, plug the light to the wall, plug the ‘bridge” to the wall and use the included Ethernet cable to plug it to your router. You are set.

The kit is “Friends of hue” compatible, Philips personal wireless lighting on iOS or Android, all separate from the Disney story reading. You can choose or create your own lighting themes and for example set an alarm for your spotlight to start with hues of a glorious sunrise. You can even control the light when away on your phone.
