Global News has learned the father of the teen victim in the Ibrahim Ali trial was recently arrested and released by Vancouver police in connection with allegations a gun was taken into the courthouse on the final day of the trial.
He has been released with a number of conditions, including having no contact with the two defence lawyers and to stay away from B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.
Vancouver police will only say one man has been arrested and released, pending further investigation.
The man’s name is protected under a publication ban.
In a statement, Vancouver police said it “has initiated an investigation into allegations that a member of the public brought a weapon into the Vancouver Law Courts during the trial of Ibrahim Ali. One man has been arrested and was released pending further investigation. We are unable to share additional information at this time.”
Police also confirmed that no charges have been laid at this time.
In addition, the defence has filed a notice to appeal Ali’s first-degree murder conviction.
The notice lists 25 grounds for a possible appeal including third-party suspects, which includes two other people who were arrested for the teen’s murder, collection of DNA from the Kurdish community and not providing the jury with circumstances surrounding the death of sex assault expert witness Dr. Tracy Pickett.
On Friday, Ali was found guilty of killing the young teen whose body was found in Burnaby in 2017.
