SIAST instructors are set to walk off the job this weekend.
“SGEU’s professional services and academic negotiating committees have formally issued 48-hour strike notice to SIAST management in the wake of a failed mediation attempt,” the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union said in a news release issued Wednesday.
Two weeks ago, the union representing 700 professional services staff and 1,300 instructors at campuses in Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert, had asked for out-of-province mediation to restart negotiations that had broken down.
“We are frustrated that SIAST will not move on its position even though we have scaled back our financial proposal,” said Tracey Kurtenback, chairperson of the union’s negotiating committee.
The earliest that the workers will be off the job is Saturday morning, she said.
In 2007, SIAST and the union settled the latest agreement with the help of an out-of-province mediator. That agreement expired 16 months ago.
