PEACHLAND — A Peachland couple is looking for another place to stay after their house caught fire earlier today.

Smoke began filling the single story home on Elliott Avenue at around 2 o’clock this afternoon.

The lone occupant, a woman believed to be in her 50’s, tried to put out the fire with the help of a neighbour but the smoke proved to be too much.

Officials say the fire started in a wood-stove chimney and spread into the attic — insulated with sawdust.

“Sawdust insulation of course smolders so it took a little bit of time to get in there and get it out without creating too much damage,” says James Springer, assistant chief with the Peachland Fire Department.

The woman living in the home was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Her husband wasn’t home at the time.

The couple’s cat managed to get out safely.

The home sustained heavy smoke damage and considered inhabitable.
