Rob Ford, Wynne remember Nelson Mandela

WATCH: Rob Ford offers condolences to Mandela family

TORONTO – Rob Ford, Norm Kelly, and Kathleen Wynne were among dozens of politicians to share their condolences in the wake of Nelson Mandela’s death at the age of 95.

Mandela led the fight against apartheid in South Africa, spending 27 years in prison before becoming the country’s first black president.

Current South African President Jacob Zuma made the announcement at a news conference Thursday, saying: “We’ve lost our greatest son.”

Ford told reporters outside of his office that the world can learn “patience” from Mandela.

Rob Ford’s statement:

“We join the people of South Africa in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela, a true leader and advocate for freedom and democracy.

Mandela dedicated his life to social justice in South Africa and around the world. As President of South Africa, he introduced a new constitution and launched numerous reforms and policies for the benefit of all South African people.

Toronto and Canada had a special connection with Nelson Mandela. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mandela family and the people of South Africa.”

His lifelong fight for democracy and social justice inspired millions of people around the world. Words cannot adequately express our gratitude. For the millions of people who he inspired, his legacy will never be forgotten.”

Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath: 

“On behalf of New Democrats, I am saddened to hear of the passing of an exceptional leader, man and legend, Nelson Mandela.

He was the father of a nation, who changed people’s lives around the world.  He was a symbol of courage, freedom and justice.  He taught us how to live with grace and dignity, and without bitterness.
