Wildlife fencing helps curb moose-vehicle collisions

FREDERICTON – RCMP in New Brunswick say highway fencing is leading to a decrease in the number of people killed in collisions with moose.

Staff Sgt. Gary Cameron says there have been only five fatalities in the province so far this year.

Since 2007, the Department of Transportation has installed close to 370 kilometres of wildlife fencing.

Cameron says motorists still need to be cautious when driving, especially at night.

Cathy McCollum, who began lobbying the province in 2006 after her daughter was injured in a collision with a moose, says she’s noticed a decrease in the number of accidents near her home.

McCollum says she hopes the government will continue adding more wildlife fencing to New Brunswick highways.
