KELOWNA– Some good news for parents and teachers of 14 thousand students in the North and South Okanagan.
CUPE had served 72 hour strike notice last Thursday, but after a day of hard bargaining, Monday, the union and it’s employer reached a tentative deal, averting job action planned for Tuesday.
CUPE local 523 represents 1100 education workers in the Okanagan Similkameen, Okanagan Skaha and North Okanagan Shuswap school districts.
The union says it’s signed on to a provincial framework agreement that provides a 3.5% wage increase over two years.
The deal is retroactive to July of last year and expires in June of 2014.
CUPE’s National Service Representative, Rob Hewitt, admits it’s a short time period but expects this agreement will create an improved bargaining relationship when the two sides meet at the table again in six months.
CUPE will now take this agreement to it’s members and the employer to it’s various boards for ratification.
That’s expected to happen in the next week to 10 days.
