The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating after a woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) sent an emergency call on Monday at approximately 9:50 a.m. requesting assistance in the 500 block of Arlington Street. It said crews were attempting to treat a woman in medical distress. The agency said the woman was showing “erratic and combative behaviour.”
A call for police assistance was made when, according to the WFPS, an individual at the scene was seen armed with broken glass.
In a press release Monday, Winnipeg police said officers physically restrained the woman to assist WFPS, who were hoping to administer sedation. The woman was said to be “combative” and spitting at emergency responders.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) was notified on Tuesday of the incident. In a release on Oct. 24, they noted that officers struggled with the woman and was then given a chemical sedative. The IIU further stated that she experienced a medical event after being given the sedative and was transported to the Health Sciences Centre in condition
