EDMONTON – Numerous flights were cancelled or delayed Monday at the Edmonton International Airport.

A total of 22 flights were delayed.

Edmonton and the surrounding area was under a heavy snowfall warning Monday morning.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“A low has set up in the southern part of the province with a trough of low pressure sitting right over Edmonton. These systems tend to bring us a lot of snow,” explained Global Edmonton meteorologist Nicola Crosbie on Monday.

“With an arctic airmass bearing down on us from the north, this creates a huge pressure gradient.  This differential creates a lot of wind.”

“The challenge for today will be with the blowing and drifting snow, not so much heavy accumulations.”

“This system will pass by early Tuesday, and then we will get very cold – likely wind chills nearing warning criteria of minus 40.”

Many other areas of Alberta were under a snowfall, winter storm, or blizzard warning.
