THURSDAY NIGHT JAZZ BAND

The Summerland Community Centre, 9710 Brown Street, is excited to announce that the Thursday Night Jazz Band (TNJB) will be performing for a fundraising concert/dance on Friday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. TNJB is a standard 17-piece big band with 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, a rhythm section (drums, piano, guitar, keyboards) and singers. Most of the musicians are from a professional background in music, or are excellent amateurs. The core group of originals, music teachers and some close friends, started the band just over 30 years ago. For many years, the band members gathered together just to practice and play for, and with, each other. But many people started to want to play for the public again. So members agreed that fundraising would be the main goal of the band. In just a handful of years recently, TNJB managed to raise well over $25,000 for local community causes. The band plays a variety of tunes starting from the 40’s, when big bands were very popular, through the decades. Some of the band’s favourite music stems from the big horn bands of the 1970’s playing great rock and jazz-rock fusion (Steely Dan, Chicago, Tower of Power) some funk (Stevie Wonder) and Motown, so the repertoire is diverse. The music is show-style, energetic, well-arranged, fun, and very danceable! Tickets are $15 cash only and are available now at Artisans of the Okanagan in Summerland.
