The Marriage of Figaro is an operatic whirlwind of mistaken identities, awkward situations, and comedic antics that occur on a single chaotic day – the wedding day of household servants Figaro and Susanna.
With the help of the Countess of the manor, the maid Susanna must find a way to prevent the Count’s advances. Meanwhile, Figaro owes a debt to Marcellina and must find a way to avoid having to marry her if he fails to repay it. Themes of love, infidelity, and forgiveness are all layered into this matrimonial confection.
From the famous overture to the final notes, Mozart’s score drives the frenetic energy of this classic comedic opera. Written at a time of revolution, it caused a stir for portraying the working classes as wiser, shrewder, and more civilized than the aristocratic ruling class.
