Sooke Philharmonic Fling! - image

The annual free outdoor Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra concert, conducted by Michael Klazek, is back on Sunday July 9th at 2:30 PM. This popular event will kick off with a performance by the Sooke Harmony Project – SD 62 String Orchestra, an ensemble of dedicated young musicians who secured the Adjudicators Choice award at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival in April. This year’s soloist is David Stewart, viola, a Sooke resident since his retirement from the concertmaster position in Bergen, Norway several years ago. He will play Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen’s Romance, a popular summer concert piece. The Fling! is the final concert of this 25th anniversary season of the Sooke Philharmonic. Incidentally, the Bergen Philharmonic recently celebrated its 250th anniversary! Also on the program is music from a suite of pieces depicting regional birds, by Victoria Symphony Orchestra principal trombonist and composer Brad Howland. The full orchestra will join forces for enduring favourites such as Haydn’s London Symphony, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, and Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave as well as our version of Over the Rainbow. The grand finale is Tchaikovsky‘s spectacular 1812 Overture. Prize draws for 1 night stay at the Prestige Hotel in Sooke, lawn chairs, courtesy of Village Foods and a 50/50 draw add to the fun! Sooke mayor Maja Tait will be on hand to welcome the audience. There is plenty of room in the park. Bring a blanket or chair and your sun hats. In case of rain, the concert will take place at the Sooke Community Hall. See you there!
