American writer Shirley Jackson was simultaneously a “ground-breaking domestic humourist, and subtle social satirist” during her wildly successful career. Her short story The Lottery, which presents the shockingly sinister underside of a bucolic American town, brought her significant fame as “an unrivaled mistress of the macabre” and is now considered a gothic classic. Jackson’s novels The Haunting of Hill House (1959) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962) are considered two of the greatest psychological thrillers of the 20th century. Through readings, performance, and music, award-winning Canadian collaborators- actor Melody Johnson and composer Allen Cole – bring to life Shirley Jackson’s writings, both light and dark, in a captivating observation of one of America’s finest writers. In this one-act show, one doesn’t need to know Jackson’s work to recognize, delight and perhaps even shudder at the horror she found in the ‘everydayness’ that centered around family and community. The production uses historical information and newly released letters, and includes an evocative retelling of The Lottery.
