OKINAWAN CULTURE RETURNS Karakoro Eisa of Osaka is returning to Winnipeg to perform at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights on Sunday, August 18 at 1 pm. When they performed a concert in 2017, Dr. John Young, the Museum’s CEO was so impressed by the spectacular show that he asked the EISA director Yoko Matsui if they would consider performing at the Museum. One of the attractions for the troupe of 68 to return to Winnipeg is again to visit the Human Rights Museum. This year’s performance was inspired by the fight against apartheid in South Africa and the program is based on Nkosi Sikelelei, a song that’s been called the national anthem of the movement that defeated racial segregation in South Africa and freed its leader, Nelson Mandela. What is meaningful for the visit of Karakoro EISA is that it coincides with the award winning exhibition Mandela: Struggle for Freedom completing its run at the Museum at the end of August. Tickets for the show are $25 or $20 for members of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and can be purchased on line at humanrights.ca or phone (204)289-2000. The performance takes place in the Buhler Hall at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights starting at 1 pm. For more information contact the Museum or jcamwpg.ca
