The Vancouver Art Gallery presents Vikky Alexander: Extreme Beauty, the first retrospective of the renowned Canadian artist, on view from July 6, 2019 to January 26, 2020. Alexander began her career, which spans more than thirty years in New York in the 1980s where she became known for photographing found images in critique of consumer culture. She innovatively enlarged and juxtaposed images from fashion magazines, including of model Christie Brinkley as featured in the twenty-foot series Obsession (1983). Alexander moved to Vancouver in the 1990s, where her work found parallels among conceptually-driven artists, exploring formal tropes of architecture and interior décor but also of artificiality and nature. Now living in Montreal, the artist continues to produce works unravelling mechanisms of display while capturing everyday consumer culture. Featuring photography, sculpture, collage and installation, this exhibition of more than eighty works includes new massive murals created in 2019.
