The Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF) proudly presents the triumphant return of the highly provocative Japan-based butoh ensemble Dairakudakan, showcasing their latest theatrical extravaganza with the explosive Canadian premiere of Pseudo human /Super human on March 8 & 9, 2019 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. Following the thundering applause of Dairakudakan’s appearances at VIDF in 2015 and 2017, the beloved butoh troupe returns with a freshly exotic exposition on the fragility of humanity’s pursuit of happiness and prosperity through technology, choreographed by Akaji Maro, the Company’s director hailed by The Georgia Straight as a “darkly funny genius”. Featuring stunning iron and glass stage installations of dynamic sculptor KUMA/Katsuyuki Shinohara, set to a frenetically energetic score of techno music by Keisuke Doi and Jeff Mills, the butoh masters commence a futuristic odyssey, advancing forward to a world where artificial intelligence threatens to consume our very existence. VIDF runs March 4–30 2019. Festival tickets and event details available at vidf.ca or by calling 604.662.4966.
