WHAT IS SHINERAMA? It is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser with over 50 universities and colleges across the country raising money in support of cystic fibrosis research! In 1964, a group of students shined shoes for donations and raised over $1,300. Now we do more than shine shoes; we dance, sing, wash cars and do what we can to raise money and awareness. Over the past 53 years, Shinerama has raised over $26 million.
WHO ARE WE? We are a group of 80 Physical Therapy students at the University of Saskatchewan dedicated to fundraising and raising awareness about cystic fibrosis! OUR GOAL THIS YEAR IS: $30,000. Help us FIGHT Cystic Fibrosis!
What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. Almost 4,200 Canadians have cystic fibrosis. It is a multisystem disease that affects mainly the lungs and digestive tract. It causes severe breathing problems and extreme difficulty in digesting and absorbing nutrients. 85.4% of Canadians with cystic fibrosis must take pancreatic enzymes to digest food and absorb nutrients. Individuals with cystic fibrosis require daily chest physical therapy and medication to keep their lungs free from congestion. 1 in 3,600 children born in Canada are diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and there is currently NO CURE!
