Surrounded by family, she is steeped in a single secret: that she has returned to her ancestral home with a singular mission to find the identity of a man who abused her as a child and take justice into her own hands. A Chitenge Story is a young woman’s autobiographical account of releasing trauma, embracing heritage, and uncovering her ultimate healing. A Chitenge Story comes at a time when survivors of sexual harassment and assault are speaking up and actually being listened to. In the past few months, the hashtag #metoo has swept across social media and was posted by several people who have survived some form of sexual abuse. Our communities are more ready than ever have this conversation. The fact that this unique one woman play offers a New Canadian perspective could not be more timely and relevant to Calgary’s incredibly diverse population. A Chitenge Story is created and performed by Makambe K. Simamba, Directed by Kathryn Smith, with Set & Costume Design by Sarah Uwadiae, Lighting Design by Kathryn Smith, Sound Design by Aidan Lytton, and Stage Management by *Kennedy Greene.
