Lohri Festival: This festival of North India has become one of the main attractions in the south Asian community of Winnipeg since 2015. It is celebrated on winter solstice day to denote the last of the coldest days of winter to celebrate the birth of a newborn baby and a new bride. “Lohri is celebrated in a traditional way by sitting together around the bonfire at sunset, singing traditional songs, dance, toss sesame seeds, sugar-candy and other sweets onto the bonfire. This is to show respect to the natural element of fire. This ritual is performed for thanking the Sun God and seeking his continued protection. The vision of AWOW to host the Festival is to showcase our culture and preserve the heritage and connect youth with traditions. Performers from different communities are invited to participate to gain respect and understanding of different cultures.
