Lloyd Arntzen’s 90th Birthday Hot Jazz Fest

Celebrating Vancouver traditional jazz legend Lloyd Arntzen’s 90th birthday, Vancity Hot Jazz Society in association with Vancouver Dixieland Jazz Society are hosting a live concert & dance on October 1st, 2017, at the Peretz Centre in Vancouver. Lloyd Arntzen (clarinetist, saxophonist, vocalist and prolific bandleader) is one of the founding fathers of Vancouver’s hot jazz scene. Lloyd’s presence has enriched the lives of Vancouver musicians, swing dancers, students and hot jazz enthusiasts for more than six decades. What is hot jazz? Think Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and Jelly Roll Morton. **Lloyd’s band played for Louis Armstrong when the great Satchmo stepped off the train into Vancouver’s Great Northern Station in 1948. **Lloyd founded Vancouver’s Jazz Band Society in 1958. His concerts and dances ultimately led to the founding of Vancouver’s iconic Hot Jazz Club in 1973. **Lloyd still frequently performs with his son, Tom Arntzen (pianist, vocalist) and grandsons Evan Arntzen (clarinetist, saxophonist, vocalist) and Arnt Jeffrey Arntzen (guitarist, banjoist, vocalist) – all accomplished professional musicians. **Lloyd’s song, “Where The Coho Flash Silver,” is sung by generations of Canadian schoolchildren. He taught elementary school music and band in Vancouver schools for more than three decades. On October 1, Lloyd will lead two of his bands featuring friends and family from New York, Washington State & Vancouver: THREE GENERATIONS OF JAZZ features Lloyd Arntzen, Tom Arntzen, Georgina Arntzen, Evan Arntzen, Arnt Jeffrey Arntzen, Jen Hodge, Julian MacDonough and Alan Matheson from 2~5pm.
