We’re excited to welcome visitors to the Salt Spring Eco-Living and Home Tour this July 30th. Come to Salt Spring Island and get inspired by innovative examples of eco-building, renewable energy technology, tiny homes, and sustainable living. “We challenge you to come away from this tour without an action plan for your own home and garden,” says tour organizer Elizabeth White. Not limited to homes, the Eco-Living & Home Tour includes food gardens, edible landscapes, and planet-friendly ways of living that are taking root on Salt Spring, Canada’s premier EV location and a leading renewable energy destination. The popular tour is held every two years and is hosted by Transition Salt Spring, a local group that has been helping islanders reduce their ecological footprints for over twenty years. The self-guided daylong tour includes some of B.C.’s most interesting examples of green living, including energy-efficient and passive solar buildings, rainwater harvesting, food production, renewable energy, and transportation alternatives. Tour sites, which range from a tiny-home to a large organic farm, push the boundaries of sustainable living. Visitors will see and get a feel for Salt Spring’s unique “boutique gumboot” style, emblematic of Gulf Islands culture. Tickets are available for $20 until July 1st, when they go up to $25. Online at http://tinyurl.com/EcoHomeTourSSi. Sponsored by Windsor Plywood, Motorize EV, Green City Builders, Slegg Building Materials, and Bear Foot Renewables, the 2017 Salt Spring Eco-Living and Home Tour is a fundraiser for Transition Salt Spring. In addition to the biennial tour, Transition Salt Spring projects include the largest school-based solar power array in B.C., community allotment gardens and a green enterprise micro-lending co-operative. Transition Salt Spring also hosts a monthly Green Drinks gathering along with regular speakers’ and film series devoted to building local resilience and reducing fossil fuel dependency—activities designed to support the Salt Spring Climate Action Plan.
