HERRING PEOPLE: An Arts-Based Initiative - image

This public event aims to raise awareness of Pacific herring’s role in BC marine ecosystems, aboriginal communities, and commercial fisheries. Hereditary Chief and master carver James Hart will speak about reconciliation in the context of his pole, Haida artist April White will officially launch her “Herring People” serigraph series, Tom Hackett will present his “Herring Quest” video on herring values and science, produced with Dr. Mimi E Lam, who will discuss “What values are at stake in the management of herring in BC?” We invite voices from First Nations, the herring industry, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, academia, and broader society. Join the conversation to understand what this fish can do for you and what you can do for this fish!
