Bead-a-thon

Friends of the Saint-Boniface Museum

The Beads, Sharing and Heritage event that we are organizing aims to raise funds for the Saint-Boniface Museum. We are offering a full day of programming as well as a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community. Originally opened in 1847 under the direction of the Grey Nuns, the convent served as the first hospital in Western Canada. It was also an orphanage, a residence for seniors, and a school, initially for both boys and girls. Louis Riel was also a student there. In November 1958, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated the building as a historic site and recommended its preservation as well as its possible use as a museum. Today, the Saint-Boniface Museum is recognized as a building of exceptional national importance, both historically and architecturally, and has received numerous distinctions. It is one of the most historically significant sites in Manitoba, welcoming visitors each year from around the world. It also enjoys a national reputation for its collections and for its building. The Saint-Boniface Museum also houses an extensive collection on Métis history and on Louis Riel. Currently, the Saint-Boniface Museum building is closed to the public due to necessary renovation work. This initiative is being led by Lisa Hettrick, who deserves full credit for her leadership and considerable efforts. The event will take place over one day, on May 31, 2026, at the CCFM. It will be bilingual (French and English).

During the day:

• We will invite beaders to visit historic beadwork pieces, the Grandmother Pieces

• Food will be provided by Promenade Brasserie

• Music and jig dancers from Local Kinew

• And who knows, maybe one or two surprises…
