May is FMD Awareness Month, and we’d like to promote awareness of FMD through Landmark Illuminations across Canada (and the US). Many Canadian Landmarks will be participating this year including “Light the Bridge” Edmonton on May 21st. FMDSA is the only North American medical non-profit working towards better diagnosis and treatment of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD). FMD is a vascular disease that affects mostly women (90%) but is very under-diagnosed. It can result in arterial dissections, aneurysms, stroke/TIA, SCAD (a type of heart attack), resistant hypertension, organ loss, among other health issues. Researchers believe that most people with FMD will not be diagnosed, due to lack of awareness and education. Generally, doctors have heard of FMD but have little or no understanding of how to treat/monitor patients. In most cases, it’s only after an event, like stroke or heart attack, kidney failure or aneurysm, that FMD is discovered…sometimes too late. We need public awareness of this rare under-diagnosed disease. The FMDSA is the only North American nonprofit committed to supporting those diagnosed with this little understood disease, raise awareness for those that are yet to be diagnosed and encourage research to support doctors.
