Tales from the Black Woods Part 2 – A Clarinet Studio RecitalThe clarinet students from the University of Alberta will be performing their fourth annual clarinet studio showcase. This group, under the study of Don Ross and Julianne Scott, contains members from the Ceremonial Guard, Edmonton Youth Orchestra, and various university music ensembles. The recital features a variety of clarinet pieces by Schmitt, Weber, Lowry, and many more. Come see Adriana Jankovic, Claire Neilson, Elizabeth Smith, Linnea Signore, Nadya Ajani, Meijun Chen, Bailey Hansen, Kassandra Tchir, Marina Powers and Jacob Eisenstat perform an evening of diverse clarinet music. The Shean Strings CompetitionOn Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20, 2017, six string players from across Canada will take to the stage of Muttart Hall at the Alberta College Campus of MacEwan University (10050 MacDonald Drive, Edmonton) as they vie for the $8,000 top prize in The Shean Strings Competition and the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a later date. The competition will see the competitors perform their String Recital Programs on Friday, May 19 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:30 – 9:30 PM, and perform their String Concertos on Saturday, May 20 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:30 – 8:30 PM. The adjudications and awards will follow the concertos on Saturday at approximately 9:00 PM, and a reception will follow the awards. This year’s competitors (with hometowns in parentheses) are: Shang Ko (Sunny) Chan, violin (Surrey, BC); Gabrielle Després, violin (Edmonton, AB); Sean Gao, violin (Burnaby, BC); Alice Lee, violin (Toronto, ON); Grace Sohn, violoncello (Coquitlam, BC), and Grace Takeda, viola (North Vancouver, BC). The adjudicators for this year’s competition are: David Hoyt, Chair; Norman Adams, violoncello; and Edmonton-born Jessica Linnebach, violin. Post Cards – Festival City WindsFestival City Winds (Adult Concert Bands), under the direction of Artistic Director Wendy Grasdahl, invites you to experience an evening of musical Post Cards taking place on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 7:30PM in the Robert Tegler Centre, Concordia University of Edmonton (7128 Ada Boulevard – 73 St. south of 112 Ave.). The evening concert will feature all four Festival City Winds’ concert bands — Novice Band; Intermediate 2 Band; Intermediate 1 Band; Advanced Band — each performing their own selections. The bands will be conducted by Wendy J. Grasdahl and Dr. Eila Peterson. There will be a reception following the concert as well as door prizes. The evening’s program will transport the listener around the world with a variety of musical post cards. Listeners will be taken to England with “The Earl of Oxford’s March” and “Three London Miniatures” (which includes an expressive, lyrical tribute to the late Princess Diana); to the Spanish countryside with “Visions of Aranjuez”; to Latin America with a tango call “The Blue Orchid”; to Egypt with “Sun Cycles”; to the USA with “American Overture” and “Diamond Joe’s Riviera Club” (taking the listener inside a Chicago gangster’s private night club); to Greece with “One Night in Athens”; to Vancouver Island with “Cathedral Grove”; and out to sea with “The High Barbaree: Songs of the Sea”. In Our DreamsOn May 28 the Edmonton Youth Choir presents a very special concert, In Our Dreams. Together with the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir and the Edmonton Children’s Choir, the choirs will explore the world of dreams – imaginations, hopes, and visions. From the exhilaration of Eric Whitacre’s “Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine” to the tranquility of Ēriks Ešenvalds’ “Only in Sleep”, the music will probe humanity’s ability to explore our world via the imagination. The concert features works by Canadian composers Lavinia Kell Parker, Jeff Enns, James Rolfe, Cy Giacomin and Robin John King, as well as pieces by Hans Leo Hassler, Orlando Gibbons, Ivo Antognini, Jan Sandström, Jake Runestad, Shawn Kirchner and more. This is going to be an enchanting concert and it’s all in the fabulous setting of the Hawrelak Park Amphitheatre. May 28 is also the CD Release Concert for Playing with Fire – the latest CD recording of the Edmonton Youth Choir. Playing with Fire was recorded over three seasons and includes music prepared for tours to the Baltic Region and South Africa, and for competitions in Canada and the World Choir Games - where the choir won two gold medals.
