Blanket StoriesMarie Watt is a multidisciplinary artist born to the son of Wyoming ranchers and educators and a daughter of the Turtle Clan of the Seneca Nation (Iroquois/Haudenosaunee). Her work draws from history, biography, Iroquois protofeminism and Indigenous teachings, and addresses the arc of history with the intimacy of memory. Blankets are everyday objects that carry extraordinary histories of use. As commonplace objects, blankets are conceptually attached to narrative and personal stories. In her tribe and other Indigenous communities, blankets are given away to honor those who witness important life events. Artist Talk | Thursday, March 16, 7 pm Join visiting artist Marie Watt as she speaks to her artistic practice and inspiration. Watt’s work–small meditative pieces and large, monumental sculptures–has been featured at the National Gallery of Canada, the Smithsonian, the Tacoma Art Museum and other prestigious institutions. Conversation: Community-Based Arts | Friday, March 17, 12 pm Engage in a conversation with Marie Watt around her practice of collaborative sewing circles as a way of interacting with communities. Having compared these daily interruptions to barn raisings, Watt will share what she has learned from the simple comings together of people. Sewing Circle | Saturday & Sunday, March 18–19, 11 am–2 pm No sewing experience necessary! Marie Watt invites you to take part in a special community sewing circle at MOA. In an age where so much of our lives are mediated by technology, there is something to be said for gathering in such an ordinary and neighbourly way.OtherMar 16 - Mar 19

Converge – Lit + Art + Music + VideoGamesICOAAT presents an evening of Lit + Art + Video Games at Lipont Art Centre in Richmond. LITERATURE Dominion Reading Series Lucky #8 goes on the Road to Lipont Place / Lipont Art Centre for Converge - Lit / Art / Music / VideoGames - Richmond on March 18th at 7pm! Writers reading for the evening are: Jane Shi Danielle LaFrance Raoul Fernandes Adrienne Gruber Hasan Namir Mohamad Kebbewar Aidan Chafe Christopher Evans Shazia Hafiz Ramji Curtis LeBlanc ART Deanne Achong, whose work has been in galleries world-wide, will present Slow Takes, two long-exposure photographs taken with a film camera. In these works, she tackles the concept of time. Achong says, “In today's world of Instagram, Snapchat and the like, everything is almost instantaneous - including the sharing of the image. This project invites the audience to consider notions of time, and movement, where the blur created by the movement of the subject freely sitting during the longer exposure is part of the finished image.” Much like the slow food movement, using slow film with the portrait subject sitting for anything from five to thirty minutes for their portrait lets the sitter savour both the moment and the results. Achong will also be taking slow portraits at the Converge event with the sitters able to download or acquire their slow portraits as a reminder of the event and Achong’s artistry. More to come! Cover by donation, suggested donation $5. (No one turned away). Tickets in advance or at the door. Proceeds to the writers, artists, performers and to cover snacks!
