Former Sask. FN employee accused of stealing over $1M turns himself in

SASKATOON – A man at the centre of a Canada-wide warrant after allegedly stealing over one-million dollars from the Whitecap Dakota First Nation is back in the country.

Hugo Gallegos, 40, voluntary returned to Canada on Oct. 29.

Gallegos is accused of stealing the money when he worked in the accounting department at the First Nation south of Saskatoon.

Financial irregularities were uncovered by external auditors and accountants determined it was theft.

RCMP were alerted on Sept. 6 but were unable to find Gallegos and believed he had fled to his native El Salvador.

Gallegos is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning.
