SPIRITWOOD, Sask. – A respiratory outbreak has forced the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region to place visitor restrictions at the Spiritwood health complex.

The outbreak was declared by the region’s medical health officer on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say 10 residents and four staff have become ill with the respiratory symptoms that appears to be influenza.

The affected people have been isolated and tests will be run to determine the organism.

Visitors are being asked to reschedule visits to the complex until the outbreak is declared over.

People needing to visit for urgent or compassionate reasons are required to report to a nursing station to receive instructions on how to limit exposure and the risk of transmission.

PAPHR health officials say proper hand hygiene and cough etiquette helps reduce the risk of getting or spreading respiratory illnesses including colds and influenza.
