Human remains found near Costa Concordia wreck

TORONTO – Unidentified remains have been found near the wreck of the Costa Concordia.

Officials overseeing the search for bodies around the ship said they found the remains after the capsized ship was set upright in a major salvage operation last week.

Two people remained unaccounted for since the luxury cruise liner ran aground near the Tuscan island of Giglio on January 13, 2012. Thirty-two people died that night.

Authorities said DNA tests will determine if the remains belong to the two victims that were never found.

The relatives of the missing female Italian passenger and a male Indian waiter were notified after divers found the remains Thursday morning, Civil Protection chief Franco Gabriell told reporters.

Captain Francesco Schettino, the Italian ship’s captain is currently on trial and faces 20 years in prison if convicted of charges including manslaughter and abandoning ship.
