Post-tropical Gabrielle soaks Halifax area

HALIFAX – There was no escaping the rain Friday night.

Sheets of rain, brought on by the remnants of Gabrielle, poured down on the Range Park Diamonds off the Bedford Highway.

Water, at least 10 millimetres deep in some parts, rolled over the pitcher’s mound and filled the dugouts.

What’s left of Gabrielle is expected to bring nearly 80 millimetres of rain to the Maritimes.

It made the Sackville River fast and furious late Friday as water churned in the body of water and rose quickly and rain pounded the area.

As the evening wore on, so did the heaviest rain, as the post-tropical depression moved north.

But Gabrielle still made her presence known, as her heavy rain tapered off into a drizzle.

Some parking lots ended up looking like wading pools and rain gushed out of a culvert at Hammonds Plains Road and Bluewater Road, filling roadside ditches with torrents of water.

Gabrielle may be gone and the Halifax area no longer under a rainfall warning but residents aren’t in the clear just yet: more rain is expected on Saturday.
