MONTREAL – An armed standoff with a 72-year-old man has ended, after he had barricaded himself inside a home in Montreal’s Cote-Saint-Luc neighbourhood for over 20 hours.
The incident ended quietly after 8 a.m. Wednesday morning after the septugenarian, believed to be armed with a revolver, was shot by police with a rubber bullet and arrested.
The tactical squad used an armoured vehicle with a battering ram, supplied by Quebec provincial police, to smash down the man’s front door.
Montreal police spokesperson Daniel Lacoursière confirmed that the man was taken into custody without incident.
He was not injured, but has been transported to hospital for a full evaluation after being looked at by paramedics.
Police also seized a number of firearms from the home as they conducted their investigation after the arrest.

At one point during the standoff, a shot was fired and a police officer was hit by what may have been a ricocheted bullet.
Police confirmed that a SWAT team member was struck in the foot by an object while a gunshot sound emanated from the house.
Surrounding neighbours were evacuated as a precaution.
A man claiming to be the septugenarian’s son told Montreal radio station CJAD that the incident began when his father mistook a Hydro worker for an intruder.
