The Lac-Mégantic tragedy and social media

The eyes of the world are on the small town of Lac-Mégantic.

Media experts from Influence Communications in Montreal say that within 48 hours, there were over 40,000 tweets related to the train derailment.

Social media is being used to help locate the missing.

Police set up a Facebook page to help residents find their loved ones. A website called “Support for Lac-Mégantic” was also created. It offers ways people can help those affected by the tragedy.

The event has been reported in media outlets around the world.

Experts say that, as of Monday morning, it was the third most reported item in television, print, radio and web stories around the world, just after the crisis in Egypt and the plane crash in San Francisco.
