Calgary Zoo discovers more dead fish, but says cleanup going well

CALGARY – Officials at the Calgary Zoo say they’re making significant progress with their cleanup, but have found more dead fish.

The facilities were severely impacted by the devastating flooding in Calgary last week.

Officials had previously announced the death of at least one peacock, as well as tilapia in the hippo pool and piranha in the South America exhibit.

Zoo staff say more dead fish have been discovered as they continue work to restore their grounds including 25 of approximately 125 cichlids from the Rivers’ Edge fish tanks. As well, six more piranhas have died.

Despite the losses, there is good news.

Two giraffes have been stabilized, and engineers who completed inspections of the zoo’s key animal habitats say they are structurally sound.

In addition, the team has begun the process of returning animals to their enclosures.

The zoo’s two snow leopards, three red pandas, several muntjac, emu, macaques, peccaries and Red River hogs have been returned to their habitats or other suitable spaces. alpacas are also now back on the island.

The next priority animals are the lions and tigers.

St. George’s Island and a significant portion of the zoo remain without power, including the Penguin Plunge.

The Calgary Zoo will remain closed for the next two weeks.
