Calgary takes lessons from Amsterdam on two-wheeled transportation

CALGARY – International experts from as far away as the Netherlands are here to share their expertise on expanding our downtown bike lane network.

Discussions started Tuesday on cycling culture and best practices in major cities.

Feedback from a total of four forums will be used by city planners to establish more bike lanes in downtown Calgary.

Local cyclists say they’re looking for a safer, more efficient way to get around our city on two wheels.

Visiting experts from the Netherlands, California and Seattle are weighing in.

They suggest Calgary’s bike system outside the downtown area is good, but infiltrating the downtown core will take commitment and planning.

Calgary’s first enhanced two-way bike lane is scheduled to open along 7th St. SW, from the Bow River pathway to 8th Ave. this July.

The final public forums will be held Wednesday, noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Glenbow Museum and 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Golden Age Club.
