A fatal fire broke out in the home of an 80-year-old who died earlier in the day in a freak bus accident.

Family members had gathered at the house in the 900 block of East 63rd Avenue to mourn the death of Naranjan Dhesi, an 80-year-old grandmother.

At just past 4:30 pm, a fire broke out in the basement. Once the fire was extinguished, one fatality was discovered. The victim, whose name has not been released, was not related to the mourners and is believed to be a tenant.

Family members do not believe the fire is suspicious in any way, but are “distraught” at the tragic circumstances. While the basement was gutted by the fire, the upstairs portion suffered extensive smoke damage and several broken windows.

Dhesi was loading a Premier Pacific Coach Lines bus just four blocks from her house as part of a Khalsa Centre trip to Harrison Hot Springs.

While getting on board, the bus suddenly started rolling backwards. Dhesi fell out of the bus and was pinned between the door and the pavement, police said.

Dhesi had lived in the house, which is owned by her son, with her husband for many years.

The two separate incidents are both under investigation.
