SASKATOON – A man who had fired a number of lawyers after being charged in the death of a Saskatoon university student appears close to hiring someone to represent him at his trial.
Douglas Hales, who is 34, is charged with first-degree murder and indignity to human remains by setting fire to a body in the death Daleen Bosse.
The 25-year-old aboriginal woman was last seen at a Saskatoon nightclub in 2004, and her remains were later found northeast of the city.
Hales was arrested in 2008, but his case has not been able to proceed because of problems finding defence counsel.
A Saskatoon judge heard Monday that Hales is talking to Regina lawyer Bob Hrycan, and that a key issue in the potential arrangement is whether court services will agree to pay for a junior counsel to assist Hrycan.
The case has been adjourned until June 17, and Hales is expected to go to trial next February.
