Northwest C-Train lines reopen after police probe suspicious devices

CALGARY – Two northwest LRT stations are open and running smoothly after being shut down for several hours Wednesday night, due to the discovery of two suspicious devices.

Transit officials notified police of a suspicious item on the Brentwood LRT platform just after 6 p.m.

Officials shut down both southbound and northbound Crowchild Trail as a safety precaution.

The station was evacuated and CTrains were stopped in both directions, forcing transit users off the trains and leaving them stranded.

Once the area was clear, police used a bomb robot with an on-board camera to get a closer look at the item. Originally they thought it was a pressure cooker, but it was actually a rice cooker. However, no explosive devices were found inside.

At the same time, just two stops down the same LRT line, police were also investigating a suspicious item found at the Crowfoot LRT platform.

It was discovered to be a tool box.

Calgary Transit opened up the northwest line just after 8:30 pm.

Police can’t say yet if the incidents are related, but do say they plan to review surveillance footage from both stations.

Police are still looking to speak with one suspect, someone who is known to them, but they do not consider the incident to be criminal. No charges are expected.
