Actress Amanda Bynes arrested in NYC

TORONTO — Actress Amanda Bynes — who played wholesome Penny Pingleton in the made-in-Ontario musical film Hairspray — was arrested Thursday night in New York.

Police took the 27-year-old star into custody at her West 47th Street apartment and, according to reports, charged her with criminal possession of marijuana, reckless endangerment and felony tampering with evidence.

It is alleged Bynes threw a bong out her window after officers entered her apartment.

The actress, who was wearing a blond wig, was taken to Roosevelt Hospital for psychiatric observation before being booked.

For months, Bynes has been tweeting bizarre comments and intimate photos to her 1.1 million followers.

She appears on the cover of the latest issue of InTouch with the headline: “Destroyed By Fame.” The magazine claims Bynes has “hit rock bottom.”

Bynes was charged with DUI last year after hitting a police car in West Hollywood. She was later arrested for driving with a suspended license.

In a 2007 interview with HLN, Bynes boasted about not falling into the traps of fame and fortune.

“The club scene and drinking doesn’t appeal to me. I’ve never even been offered drugs,” she said. “I’m surrounded by people who aren’t interested in that. I have my eye on the prize, which for me is a long career and I don’t want to blow what I’ve worked so hard to achieve.”

When it was pointed out that she has not gone to jail, Bynes replied: “Not yet.”
