UPDATE: Wildfire near Whitecourt grows

EDMONTON – An out of control wildfire near Whitecourt continues to grow.

The fire broke out just after 2:00 Saturday afternoon, about 16 kilometres southwest of the town of Whitecourt.

Its size has grown from 20 hectares on Saturday to 47 hectares on Sunday.

“We have about 35 firefighters on it, as well as about four helicopters and various air tankers as well. We also have heavy equipment heading that way,” said wildfire information officer, Geoffrey Driscoll with Environment and Sustainable Resource Development on Saturday afternoon.

Another 36 firefighters were expected to join the fight Sunday.

Fire retardant has been spread around the fire, in an attempt to help keep the blaze contained.

Officials say at this time no residents or structures are at risk.
