CALGARY – Police are assuring the public a suspicious bag found outside Old City Hall in downtown Calgary on Friday didn’t contain any explosives.
Police rushed to the 700 block of Macleod Trail S.E. just before 8 a.m. for reports of a suspicious package.
The bag in question was a black backpack found near a lower-floor window.

Employees in Old City Hall were evacuated as a precaution and police stopped public access to the nearby Calgary Public Library.
The CPS Tactical Team responded to the area in the same vehicle that was deployed to the Calgary Courts Center on Wednesday for a bomb scare. They performed an x-ray and physical examination of the package.
After examining the bag, police confirmed there were no explosives inside. The bag contained a handful of items such as mouthwash, some clothing and a few CDs.

Police closed down several nearby streets while the investigation was underway, including northbound Macleod Trail. The road closures which caused a large backup in the downtown core during the morning commute.
Calgary Transit also temporarily changed LRT service to stop CTrains from stopping at both City Hall platforms.
